More paintings by Van Gogh all titled " The Sower"

  • Questions you might ask: What does it mean to be influenced

by someone? How was Van Gogh influenced by Bernard and Millet?

Was the work Van Gogh did a complement to the artist whose style

he copied? What simularities/differences in the paintings? What

media do you think each artist used?

  • We read more in the book Vincent Van Gogh Portrait of an Artist

by Jan Green.

  • We also read about his life while he was in Paris.

  • While I was reading the kids did a water color with an outline drawing

of Millet's The Sower. Go here to get the outline print: http://www.colormeonline.com/masterpiece/paintings/paintsower.html

February 6th Wednesdays are light days as our schedule is busy.

  • We do like this compare and contrast thing! When I found that

Van Goghs First Steps was a copy of Millets First Steps we just had to

take a look. I have a print hanging in my house of Van Goghs First Steps.

I love this painting. The delicate play on light, the timeless topic, all the

fine detail, and the wonderful soothing colors.

February 7th

  • Today we looked at The Good Samaritan by Van Gogh after

Delacroix, Millit and Henry Pijcke. I used some notes from this article: http://www.newmediabible.org/1goodsam/travel/07luke103637/articles/RTFfiles/visualimagesofgsaml.rtf

We looked at the bibical account of The Good Samaritan. Read in our current book and read more on Paris.

Henry Pijcke The Good Samaritan

This is the only picture I could find of Delacroix's The Good Samaritan.

While the image is legal to copy,  it is very poor.

However enough to see that it is very different

from the above copies of his style. I will replace the image as soon as I find a better one!

The kids really had a good time finding things in each of the paintings, comparing and contrasting, and learning about how artist learned from each other.

February 8th

  • Free Day.  My 13yo chose to copy The Arlesienne.

My daughters

I think she did a great job.

Read more from the book on Van Gogh. Vincent Van Gogh Portrait of an Artist

by Jan Green. A note here about content. The book does tell of his relationships with a women of the streets. I felt it good to share with my children. We talked about his loneliness, his disagreements with religion of the church, the strained family relationships, and his lack of relationship with God. We searched the Word to learn what it says about this kind of behavior. Since our family does street ministry our children are aware of these types of things. We are  teaching them to have a strong relationship with the Lord, to stand on their own belief not that of the church or their parents but one of the Word of God.
