While I do not see the value in removing tv totally or taking away all electronics from my children I do see the value in learning how to schedule time and be more self directed. In our house we do not have TV/ cable.. We have a tv and we watch dvds or videos as a family. We have four computers. We use them for school, research, writing, and fun. The kids are limited to 1/2 hour of fun time daily. They can do as much school related work as they want a day on the computers. ( we find they have learned to scheldule their time wisely, are learning how to research, and investigate, and know how to use many programs)We do have an Xbox. We use it maybe once a week. With that said we are participating in the Unplugged Project to encourage more independant learning, meet new blogger friends and learn new things!
Here is a small intro from Unplug Your Kids site:
Sometimes we all need a little push (me included) to set aside our chores and have some creative fun with our children. The Unplugged Project is a weekly communal project which hopefully will inspire you and me to spend some high-quality but low-tech time with our little ones.
Every week I propose some sort of theme. I try to keep the weekly topic very general so that you can adapt it to your children’s ages and interests.
Here are some examples of past themes: Red, Haiku, Toothpicks, Nature.

The Theme this week is green. We will be researching GREEN. Just the meaning of the word. I am sure it will lead us down a few bunny trails.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Green lots of info on green!
We have started a blog just for Unplugged and Project Green. http://morningstargreentime.blogspot.com/
