This is a lengthy S and T.
Okay as promised a bit about a science experiment that did not work. Yes we did exactly as the book said and still the results were not right. So we used our vast experience of working with balloons ( doesn't every homeschool mom know 50 thousand ways to use a balloon?). The experiment was on Waters Polarity.
Note the water is not bending toward the comb..... no matter what we did . We tried everyones hair in the house including the cats.
Awe success! We can actually see and feel the tug of war going on between the electrons that are shared by the atoms.
Science Experiment: ( that worked!) Water as a Solvent
Pillows. When the weather changes from the heat of summer to the brisk evenings of fall I bring out the couch pillows and blankets. To save money I buy pillows at the thrift store. I do not pay more than 50 cents a piece for them. Each season I try to save fabric from various things ( as you will see) to recover the pillows. It just freshens up our old couches and gives the room a new look.
Here is a few photos of pillows from thrift store or castoffs someone no longer wanted. They are nice but not "us"
The group of pillows below is a small sampling of pillows. ( I like cozy!) The one in the very back is flannel. The rectangle denim ( darker in color) is made from a pant leg of a very large pair of cast away jeans.
This heart shaped pillow was free. The new cover is made from a cast away pair of demin shorts. ( wait till you see what I am going to do with the front side of the shorts!)
This pillow was recovered using a portion of a duvet that was to be tossed out. ( go here if you do not know what a duvet is! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duvet ) The buttons were part of the duvet. I did not have to do button holes or sew on the buttons!
The duvet also served as a new cover for our dog bed. Our dog weighs 150 lbs. ( No he is not over weight! Just big) He has hip problems and needs a soft bed. We purchased a baby matteress at the thrift story very cheap. Inside the cover is the matteress, and two thick comfortors. ( again these were cast away blankets) A very comfy bed for a very special friend!

Maybe my favorite so far this season...a pillow cover made out of a jean skirt. We get so many junior size jean skirts in the clothing closet. It seems size 7 is a popular size. So this pillow ( above ) is a jr size 7!
These are very large comfy pillows. They usually end up on the floor for movie time or sitting on around the coffee table. The pillow ( cover ) in the back is made from the same duvet as above items. The darker pillow in the front is made from an 3X heavy duty Tee Shirt.
I have recoverd a total of 11 pillows using "free" fabrics from 2 cast away duvets, a Tee Shirt, and a pair of jeans. With the same fabric I also made a dog bed cover and a bird cage cover. I did not buy any "new to me" pillows this year. So the cost of refreshing my livingroom was zero!
Okay, I want to hire you as my decorator, I could probably afford you including gas and hotel, you are so thrifty. You get my vote for Trifty Mom of the Year!!! You have inspired me to go looking for things to do, however my problem is I could pull everything out and then not know what to do, and then have to put it back. Thanks for sharing, God bless ya!!

Girlfriend, you could've shared the last section as a Tightwad Tuesday tip! That is excellent!!! I LOVE the blue jean pillow with the pockets in the back!! How creative is that?!
ReplyDeleteAnd yes, EVERY homeschool mom knows at least 50 things to do with a balloon!!!
We have big dogs as well and it never occurred to me to get a cheap baby mattress and cover it. We purchased a bed for our black. It was only $15 @ Costco. That's not too bad, but I could've done what you did!! Oh well!!
((((HUGS))))to you my friend!!
Robyn
That photographed really well.
ReplyDeleteThe second half of your show and Tell would be perfect for Canadagirl's tightwad Tuesday. I made a jean and flannel shirt rag quilt that I love. It would go so wel with your pillows!
Because of Jesus, Bobbie

I love that pillow idea...they are beautiful. ALso I am a science geek, so I love the experiments...going to try the balloon and water one.
ReplyDeleteBe blessed,
Chasity
What a great show and tell. Those pillows are so beautiful!
ReplyDeleteHope you have a wonderful weekend.

PS: Be sure to nominate your favorite blogs for HSB Awards. Eac blog needs 3 nominations. The web address is at the top of my blog if you're interested.
Tina,
ReplyDeleteYou did an awesome job on those pillows. I had never thought about doing that. I need to do that to refresh our living room.
I had to laugh about your science experiment gone wrong. We participated in a science fair two years ago. Our project was working perfectly until we got it to the fair. Then, poof, no more!
Pam
looks nice mom! yeah i should have her sign it.
ReplyDeletelove ya,
naomi
I'll be right back. I need to take the old blue jeans out of the Goodwill bag. You have inspired me.
ReplyDeleteYou are one talented mama! The pillows are made "new" - great recycling effort. Your dog is so cute!
ReplyDeleteBlessings, Karen
Your comment about trying even the cat's fur made me laugh!
ReplyDeleteYou've done a fabulous job with the pillows and reusing things - very creative! Your big furbaby ought to be very comfy and cozy on his new bed now. :o)

That is a lot of pillow pictures! :-)
ReplyDeleteThat comb-experiment is one that actually worked here. Amazing. What did you do with the balloon, rub it on their hair? That was clever of you to use the balloon.
I recognize the solvent experiment too. LOL
Oh, Tina, you crafty thing you!! I am so inspired by your doggy bed; ours will be getting a new one very soon! For the used pillows/mattress, do you spray it with anything specific? I once heard (and have done) that if you leave a mattress/pillow out in the sunshine for a day (flip it halfway) it kills anything in it.
ReplyDeleteYour science experiments are, as ever, inspiring. Way to go!!
Wow, for as tired as I am, you have my brain a-whirlin' away on possibilities for crafts. I'm not as frugal with things like that as I should be (hanging head in shame). You, my friend, are an inspiration.
Have a lovely weekend!
love,
Shani
There sure is a lot of science learning going on at your house. That's wonderful!
ReplyDeleteAntoinette
Hey, I love science almost as much as I love cheap household ideas. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteWhat great projects, and the science experiments look like a lot of fun.
ReplyDeleteBeth
I love all your pillow ideas!! I think we're going to do homemade gifts for Christmas this year, and this is really helping me a lot!
