Making the Old New, the Used Our Own
We are on a fixed income and have had to learn how to be very frugal. We are blessed to have a clothing closet at our church and several low cost thrift stores in the area. My girls have been so blessed this year with good finds at our church clothing closet. Even shoes and jackets. ( both boys work and buy their own clothes) The girls are very creative to make the clothes their own. They are very good at changing the length of pants, making skirts out of pants, mending minor rips, buttons and sometimes we will fix a zipper. ( I dislike doing this!)
When cleaning and sorting the church clothes closet we often have to discard torn, soiled, out of date clothing. Before it goes in the trash I : remove buttons, cut out pretty applicas, lace, ribbon, save fabric for quilting ( must be able to cut a 8 in square),ect. I save worn sheets for practice with a new pattern or sewing skill. We even save cute decorations off of worn shoes. Worn blankets usually have good areas. I use these to recover our couch pillows. This gives our livingroom a new look from season to season. Ties are great for quilting! I am saving them till I have enough to make a crazy quilt.
So there you have a little look into something we do to make do. Friday I will be posting some photos of renewed pillows from cast away fabrics and thrift store pillows.
Wow! You have caused me to think about things I never even CONSIDERED saving. I am not a seamstress, but my daughter is a budding one. If we ever make the time to do more, I think she'll get into it. These were some great ideas!
ReplyDeleteOkay, you are thrifty, my friend!! Thrifty, thrifty, thrifty! I hadn't considered removing buttons or pretty pieces of embroidery, etc. from clothing before throwing it out - you can bet I'll be doing that in future. I'll bet you have one heck of a sewing room, don't you? I was imagining where you store all this stuff you keep, and thought to myself, I'd like to see her sewing room. So, anytime you want to post about that, you have one guaranteed reader, LOL!
ReplyDeleteHave a wonderful week, and I am hoping to get to the Pumpkin bread this week. *sigh* Life just gets away from me. :-)
love,

Ohhhh you are sooooooo right. I am learing this art more and more as time goes by. When I was making my clothe napkins I found such joy in sitting and sewing. No mind you I am NOT a amazing sewer. I can do simple strait stiching projects. Clothing has CHALLENGED me. lol I am going to make a bible cover next I think. I also want to make some gift bags out of some of the curtain samples that I have. I can't wait to see your S&T now !!!

I love your idea! I firmly believe that gently used clothing is the way to go. I am going to our local Goodwill soon. (-:

I sure do admire everyone that has sewing skills. Sounds like you have a terrific plan for re-using stuff that would have been thrown out. Definitely a frugal idea!!! I'm bookmarking your blog, so I can come back and see your pillows!! :)

I never thought of an old sheet for a trial run on a pattern, I have put several patterns down because they recomend I try a muslin go at it first. The muslin costs more than most of the fabric I use....
ReplyDeleteI will share in my Friday blog about my mother in law and I and how if we lived closer we would be burning up the roads hitting garage sales, second hand stores, the Goodwill, flea markets and all kinds of stuff. I do understand what you mean about "donations" though, I have gotten stuff at our Salvation Army Store and brought them home only to find the zipper of my son's "new" jeans broken.
