Through the Bible in a Year Study Notes Week 2

I so love reading the word of God! I hope you all have had a glorious time in the Lord this week.

This week it has been a challenge to keep up with the daily readings. This is mostly because I love to sidetrack and read more about the history of the time, look up words, events and so on. I am not a good reporter of all I have learned but here is a skeleton of some of the highlights of the week. I only made it to Fridays reading. ( just finished that this am). And I am still chewing on that word and want to look up more on it today.

Along with my study of the Bible I have been reading Matthew Henry’s Commentary

And John Wesley’s Commentary

I love to learn! Commentaries are very helpful tools for understanding the word.

Sunday Jan 11: Job 29-31

Job made mention many times about if his eyes had sinned… also about his thoughts, This is good to remember. I spent some time examining my thoughts. The very depths of my heart which only God and I can hear.  I also looked at what my eyes see and what I need to not look at. For me this mostly has to deal with looking at what others have. Coveting I guess. While I do not spend a great deal of time thinking this way I do love to window shop. I need to be content with what I have.  I also interpreted it as if I look at something/someone who needs help and I do nothing then I have sinned.

Job also contrast his former life to his present life. He made it clear that we should not be cast down if we are despised and hated by evil and wicked men but that we should look to Jesus who also endured contradiction.

Derision

But now they that are younger than I have me in derision, Whose fathers I disdained to set with the dogs of my flock. Job 30:1

Found 24 times in the bible.

1. (n.) Ridicule; mockery; scornful or contemptuous treatment which holds one up to ridicule.

2. (n.) An object of derision or scorn; a laughing-stock

Rabble

Upon my right hand rise the rabble; They thrust aside my feet, And they cast up against me their ways of destruction. Job 30:12

Occurs 7 times in the bible

1. (n.) An iron bar, with the end bent, used in stirring or skimming molten iron in the process of puddling.

2. (v. t.) To stir or skim with a rabble, as molten iron.

3. (v. i.) To speak in a confused manner.

4. (n.) A tumultuous crowd of vulgar, noisy people; a mob; a confused, disorderly throng.

5. (n.) A confused, incoherent discourse; a medley of voices; a chatter.

6. (a.) of or pertaining to a rabble; like, or suited to, a rabble; disorderly; vulgar.

7. (v. t.) To insult, or assault, by a mob; to mob; as, to rabble a curate.

8. (v. t.) To utter glibly and incoherently; to mouth without intelligence.

9. (v. t.) To rumple; to crumple.

Monday Jan 12: Job 32-34

Even with the commentaries I am not able to understand all that I read in Job. But I did find a few nuggets to meditate on and apply to my life.

Age does not necessarily mean more wisdom as God is the giver of wisdom.

I should be swift to hear, slow to speak, and patient in my listening to what others have to say!

Tuesday Jan 13: Job 35-37

So much about pride and not being humble enough. Really makes you think.

Wednesday Jan 14: Job 38-39

I just love that the Lord recounts to Job who created everything and knows all things. We so need to remember his sovereignty and that he sees the whole picture in the scheme of things.

Such lessons on the Ostrich and the horse!

Dayspring: The beginning of the day, or first appearance of light; the dawn; hence, the beginning.

Thursday Jan 15: Job 40-42

Friday Jan 16 Gen 12-15

“And Abram went” with no questions, no hesitation. He just obeyed.

In concerning Abrams lie about Sarah I like this statement from the commentary: “Many a time we fear where there is no fear” This was the cause of Abrams sin. Both God and Pharaoh were gracious with Abram.

Abrams prosperity did not hinder his relationship with God. ( 13:4)

Abrams ability to yield for the sake of peace in the family is amazing. (13: 8 -12 )

I love history and enjoy going in depth about the war at Sodom and Gomorrah.

Chedorlaomer: http://refbible.com/c/chedorlaomer.htm

There is some pretty awesome science in the bible too!

Slim pits: http://refbible.com/s/slime.htm

Victuals: Food for human beings, esp. when it is cooked or prepared for the table; that which supports human life; provisions; sustenance; meat; viands.  ( I honestly did not know what it meant!)

Vale: A tract of low ground between hills; a valley.

Succour: 1. (v. t.) To run to, or run to support; hence, to help or relieve when in difficulty, want, or distress; to assist and deliver from suffering; to relieve; as, to succor a besieged city.

2. (v. t.) Aid; help; assistance; esp., assistance that relieves and delivers from difficulty, want, or distress.

3. (n.) The person or thing that brings relief.

  1. Thank you for sharing your gleaning from the Scripture. It is an encouragement to all of us.

I enjoy using my Mathew Henry Commentary, too. Like yourself, I get sidetracked a lot!

  2. I'm just thanking God that you ladies kept ME accountable this week! What great friends to go along on this Bible reading journey. They say a habit takes about 6 weeks to form, so for the next 3-4 weeks I'll still be forming this "meme" habit. I forgot all about it until just now!!! I thank God for c-boxes and your faithfulness. I tried to put a name in the c-box, but it acted up. so please come on over and put your name in the Mr. Linky now!

Wow! You are truly a Bible student! Those little things that the Bible only mentions can turn into interesting studies on their own (slime pits?!)

And that lie thing. I think you're right on. It was fear, nothing else, which helps me remember that for all his talking with God and the father of many nations, Abraham was no different from us! "Perfect love casts out all fear."

But how often we forget that when something takes us by surprise!
