Show and Tell Friday

We had a cool day on Wednesday.

Part 1

Our local museum is free on Wednedays and we have not been in a very long time. A lot of the exhibits have been going through restoration and have been closed off all year. My 11yo has been wanting to see The "big" painting since they restored it. So off we went. But first we stopped at a thrift store near by to look for props for our VBS. I hit the jackpot! Found old time looking baskets at just the right price. My 11yo found a bamboo basket for 18 cents and my other daughter a pair of jeans for under 2 dollars. My 11 yo spied a vase with a Chinese painting on it and begged for it. ( it was only 1.98. She forgot her money and we have policy that if you forget your money that you have to wait untill next time) Anyway she reconized it as a copy of a famous chinese painting. It was a replica or an older ( maybe 1940s) American Pottery Craft vase. Click on picture to view larger image.

Part 2

We had a fantastic time at the museum! We visited the  Worcester Porcelain Exhibit. This was wonderful. My 11yo reconized an authentic pattern on a porcelain piece matched the American Pottery Craft piece we had seen in the thrift store. ( yes we went back to the store and got it) The piece we bought is not rare. But in my book it is priceless as my daughter loves it and studies these style of painting.

The next gallery we were anxious to revisit is the one that houses the Thomas Coles The Angel Appearing to the Shepherds, 1833-1834  (http://www.chrysler.org/hudson02.asp  This painting spans a whole wall. It is an awesome depiction of the angels and Bethleham.

As we walked through the museum I was so amazed at how the girls were using terms we had learned while studying art this year, how they reconized artist by their styles, and how much more they enjoyed coming to the museum. They would go up to a piece they reconize and talk about it at length. I was sure they did not listen that well during our lessons! But I am wrong. It is good to be wrong!

Our last stop was  Rembrants Etchings. A traveling exhibit. This was the highlight of our day. The whole process of etching was explained and the etching themselves were amazing. AND we can make our own etching. We plan to go back at the proper time next week to do that. http://www.chrysler.org/press/rembrandt.asp    http://www.rembrandtpainting.net/

It was good for me to know they learned stuff last year. We were doing a very unschool approach with CM mixed in. I was really feeling as though maybe I was mistaken.

  12. What an artsy day you all had. How wonderful that the museum is free on Wednesday. We don't live near a museum. But we look at the art on the hospital walls.:)
