This Week at Our House: Week 5 of School

We continued to grow crystals. This is always so much fun. We learned the many uses of "bluing". Amazing stuff. To learn the amazing history and uses of this "stuff" go to  http://www.mrsstewart.com/index.htm We used it to create our crystal garden.
We started with sponge pieces, real charcoal ( from the burn pile), ammonia, salt and bluing. The crystals grow fast and are really cool to look at. ( if you click on the photos you will see the crystals better. )
Day One

Day Two

Day Four
One Week

This adventure lead us to find other things we can make using bluing.

Our Alum crystal did not form on the seed crystal as the instructions said it should. Instead crystals formed on the string. These are very slow growing. ( and hard to see)

In the kitchen this week we had some fall adventures. Fall is not fall around here without pumpkin bread. YUM. Dear daughters tried their hand at Sesame Chicken and Homemade Chicken Soup. I made some Chicken Cordon Blu.

I spent the whole week trying not to be sick. Hard to be a good mommy when your nose is runny and stuffy, you ache all over and are so tired that holding up your head hurts.  I am finally feeling better, not 100 percent but better.

  1. Oh, Tina...Praying that 100% comes quickly! That pumpkin bread looks tantalizing :-)

I just found a pumpkin pasta recipe (the pumpkin is in the sauce) with goat cheese and pumpkin seeds on top...once we cool down again (a couple of days) I think I'll try it. I love pumpkin!

    Blessings,
    Lori

  2. The crystals look like fun and that bread looks very yummy. Hope you get to 100% soon. We dealt with that cold around here too (mine turning into a sinus infection) and it wasn't fun. Glad you are doing better.

  3. We had a lot of fun with growing those same crystals :) I think I shared about it in our Five in a Row studies with The Rag Coat book.

I've been trying not to be sick, too, but I have waved the white flag and stayed in bed practically all day long. I hope that you continue to feel better.
