This Week at Our House:Week 4 of School

I love it when school just happens.

Remember the small mushrooms we went out into the rain to take photos of last week? Well this is the very next day! Isn't it amazing! I think they are so pretty.

This mushroom ( below ) is yucky. It STINKS. I love the bright orange color but it truely has slime on it and smells aweful.

And if you have lots of mushrooms you know you have had tons of rain. That does not deter us from our weekly out door bbq! We grill rain. shine, or snow!

Along with the mushrooms our science this week was all about minerals and crystals. We are growing many varieties. The one below is salt.

Alum ( this one did not work)
Borax! Always a quick grower and a delight.

Here is the progress on the salt crystal.

Finished Borax Crystals.

Our Rock Table. This table is 2ft by 4 feet. We have rocks from all over the US ( mostly the west) Here the gals are identifying the different groupings.

One of my favorites!
Another! This is from Death Valley.

And no collection would be complete without real fossils. These are so beautiful.

We have two more types of crystals to grow and will start them this week.
We did Saturday school this week as we had a couple of sick days. Flu of some sort. But the gals did an amazing job keeping up and getting it all done.
In the Kitchen we did bulk cooking on Sunday and leftovers most of the week. ( The Lord knew we would be busy!) We are very creative with leftovers.  We did the usual baking. Bread, banana bread, brownie cake, lemon cake.
Thrifty find of the week: 16 folding chairs for $15.00! We needed chairs for our monthly BBQs/Bonfires.
Come back next week to learn the history of Mrs Stewart!

  1. Wow, such great projects. My daughter would love a rock collection like that. She has one, but we have no room to have it set up like that. All of her rocks are from Idaho, but we did order some other types of volcanic rocks for one of her classes. :)

  2. Hi Tina, school looks fun at your house! I love it when school "just happens" too! I have a 7th and 8th grader this year, and so far it's going really well. This is our sixth year. Thanks for stopping by my blog and leaving a comment on my fall decorations. I love the coasters too! I almost hate to put a cup on them, but that's what they're for...it's fun to change the pictures from time to time! I LOVED the pictures of the mushrooms...they are so pretty! :) I'll be back to read more soon!

    Love, Kathryn

PS it wouldn't let me comment with my blog account.

  4. I love how "fun" your school is. It's so hands-on. I would love to do more of that, but I can't seem to think through how to accomplish it. Your kids are so blessed to have you for their mom!

  5. Oooh, I vote for the borax crystals! Way cool :-)

Glad everyone is not too terribly sick, and that you were able to work through it and finish up. Super job at the thrift store, how wonderful that God provided just what you needed!

    {{{HUGS}}} and Blessings,
    Lori
